What are MUX/DEMUX devices?
A MUX (or multiplexer) is a device that combines multiple signals over a channel in the form of a single complex signal. Conversely, at the receiving end a DEMUX (or demultiplexer), then recovers the individual strands. In this way, the DEMUX works in the reverse manner to the MUX. The process is known as multiplexing (or muxing) and demultiplexing (or demuxing).
To put it another way, multiplexing and demultiplexing technology is a cost saving method designed to combine multiple communication channels over one physical medium, providing a robust and low-cost bandwidth upgrade in the process. On one end of the fibre line the communication channels are “muxed” together then transmitted over the fibre and “de-muxed” at the other end.
MUX/DEMUX devices consume no electrical power and hence are known as passive devices.
The main differences between CWDM and DWDM MUX/DEMUX devices
There are 2 standards for multiplexing: CWDM and DWDM. The main differences between CWDM (Coarse Wavelength Division Multiplexing) and DWDM (Dense Wavelength Division Multiplexing) MUX/DEMUX devices is the number of channels and ports.
- CWDM can have 18 channels; whereas DWDM can have up to 96 channels.
- CWDM is available in 8 and 16 port models; DWDM is available in a larger range of ports; common configurations are 4, 8, 16 and 32.
